https://youtu.be/cSo0tfrH6ys?t=207 timing of the arrest? Questions about it  Kochchar and Dhoot Arrests: Setting the Stage for BJP’s 2024 Election Campaign? Right through the weekend, the question on everyone’s mind was: Why now, what is new? There seems to be only one obvious answer. The timing of the wedding and the lavish extravaganza planned could not have been more unfortunate. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’, which has been attracting record crowds, had just made a triumphant entry into Delhi. Addressing a massive gathering from the iconic Red Fort, Mr Gandhi had declared that the government belongs to “Adani-Ambani”. There would have been huge political embarrassment at the inevitable photos and videos of India’s rich and powerful—some with massive bank borrowings that they have not bothered to repay—grooving away at a lavish destination wedding with a discredited banker playing host. My sources confirm that the who’s who among India’s wealthiest industrialists, bankers and corporate honchos had confirmed their presence at several of the functions.

The question that worries big corporate defaulters is whether the arrest of the Kochhars and Mr Dhoot is, indeed, the beginning of a crackdown on all those who continue to enjoy lavish lifestyles and unexplained funding, even while banks and the exchequer have taken a serious hit on their loans.

An image-conscious government would not like to be seen protecting corporate defaulters in the run up to the general elections, thus setting the stage for more action in 2023. Although such arrests may burnish PM Modi’s anti-corruption image, let’s not confuse such actions with actual reduction in daily corruption. In the 2014 campaign, Mr Modi had promised a corruption-free government. But, by all anecdotal accounts, corruption faced by the ordinary person has continued to increase steadily, despite substantially higher salaries paid to government employees at all levels.

Comment by VC on WA: And most likely anecdotal because official proceedings on deals that the ruling party would have gone to town about 8 years back are notably absent

Deepening schism & issues that seek a national mandate in 2024 By Kapil Sibal  28th November 2022 https://www.newindianexpress.com/opinions/2022/nov/28/deepening-schism-issues-that-seek-a-national-mandate-in-2024-2522781.html
India has changed. It is no longer the inclusive country we were born in. The dialogues of today are worrisome. If we do not stand up to this, our tomorrow will be in danger.

The themes that will occupy our national discourse as we approach elections to the Lok Sabha in 2024 make for a disturbing trend.

The first is the clamour for a Uniform Civil Code.

The second is the expression of outrage when a boy from a particular minority community is in a relationship with or marries a Hindu girl.

The second is the expression of outrage when a boy from a particular minority community is in a relationship with or marries a Hindu girl.

The fourth thematic trend seems to be playing out in courts. A public interest lawyer, seeks to raise divisive issues in court and has the unstinted support of the government.

One recent example of this is the sudden obsession of the current dispensation with ‘freebies’, resulting in the Election Commission entering the fray.

Added to the above are fringe elements who speak of the imminent threat to the dominance of the majority community unless the increase in population of a particular minority is arrested. This, coupled with hate speeches at various public forums and the so-called frequent Dharam Sansads, allows for communal vitriol to take root. The uninformed are likely to buy into this.

Walking with Rahul: For a politics of grace, compassion, togetherness  T M Krishna, Dec 17 2022 https://www.deccanherald.com/opinion/walking-with-rahul-for-a-politics-of-grace-compassion-togetherness-1172734.html Liberal intellectuals, who have been critical of the Congress and its dependence on its ‘first family’, have been asking for the collapse of the Congress’s present framework. But that does not mean one needs to trivialise what is a genuine exercise in nation-building. Their ignoring the Yatra is as unacceptable as the BJP-dominated media keeping it out of the news.

Rahul’s demeanour and accessibility has certainly contributed to the warmth that is overflowing in the Yatra. Despite the many pulls and pushes from people, he not only remained calm, but more importantly listened to every single person he came across respectfully. A person of the Islamic faith tried breaking through the cordon. When the security stopped him forcefully, his cap fell off. Rahul asked that he be let through and helped to find and retrieve that symbol of his faith.

My conversations with Rahul were centred around the need to give societal agency back to the people. That we need to be driving cultural change that rejects passivity and the subjugation of the mind and cultivates harmonious and sensitive co-existence. It was evident that he has realised that cultural transformation is at the core of inculcating democratic values.

But I wonder if the Congress is ready to accept this new form of politics initiated by Rahul. A politics that is not trapped purely in electoral gains and challenges hierarchies within its leadership. Will an empowered younger generation and a vocal Congress worker be able to push back the ‘old guard’?

Even in larger society, this Yatra may not result in immediate results. But the nature of the discourse that it has triggered is in itself a paradigm shift.

Seven decades down the line the electoral scene has changed for the worse and is currently dominated by emotive issues. The foundation of derailing the ‘this worldly’ issues was the Ram Temple movement. This movement became stronger after the implementation of Mandal Commission report. Since then the domination of emotive, identity issues is on the rise. This is reflected by the fact that in 2019, no party dared to utter the word secularism, as claimed by the winner of 2019 elections, Mr. Narendra Modi himself. He presented it as a trophy for the efforts of RSS-BJP’s political success.

It is in this track that any issue can be given a religious turn as we witnessed its peak in the coining of phrase ‘Corona Jihad’. This showed how electoral politics can be reduced merely to game of identity issues. BJP has mastered this art over a period of last few decades. The media, which is prostrating to BJP ideology, is putting its best efforts to magnify the doings of communal stream.

Not to be left behind, Arvind Kejrival is trying to compete which these divisive efforts revolving around identity issues, in his own unique smart ways. The AAP, which in a way, is an alternate model of communal politics; is playing its Hindutva/communal card with shrewdness. Kajriwal party is also an example of blind subservience to the dictator by the other leaders of that party. As Kejriwal demanded this; all his cronies, stated saying the same. The peak of this was Atishi Marlena, who stated that this demand of Laxmi-Ganesh is not merely Kejriwal demand, it is the aspiration of 130 crore Indians! Most of the dictatorial tendencies believe they are speaking for the whole country. This is a duplicate of what Narendra Modi, when he was Chief Minister of Gujarat, used to say that he is talking on behalf of Five Crore Gujratis. India needs a party which can accommodate all sections of society with equality and dignity, apart from welfare; it also promotes employment and proactively deals with marginalized sections of society. We need a party where religion is not mixed with politics. For many, AAP began with a big promise for a better politics, but its reality is there for all to see with its trajectory leading to demanding Laxmi and Ganesh on currency notes and dumping of Jan Lokpal in the dustbin of Hisotry!
