Open Schooling has been broadly accepted in India since the 1970s. Students who educate themselves through open schooling and take board examinations as external candidates from different national and state boards as external candidates are accepted as regular candidates for admission to all Indian colleges, Universities and autonomous Institutes like IITs.

However point 45 in the AIU Information Brochure also states, “Students having completed their education through HOME STUDIES/PRIVATE CANDIDATE shall not be issued Equivalence Certificate;” CIE offers to homeschoolers across the globe, including Indian homeschoolers, the option of taking 10+2 board examinations (IGCSE, AS and A levels) by appearing for the examinations as private candidates.

if NIOS students and State Board external candidates are accepted and considered at par with other boards, CIE private candidates need to be also treated at par and granted ‘Equivalence Certificate’.  https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeCuAURLG4kiMKxlX0PucmX-Yz9niNJ_bfQm2uxynkaTczgRw/viewform
